The first conclusions of the report on Latvia’s competitiveness, presented at the SSE Riga on Thursday, are that it is hampered mostly by shadow economy and low labour productivity. The social and regional inequality is disturbing as well. But the diversification of Latvia’s export structure is the positive signal for Latvia’s competitiveness. According to Christian Ketels Of Harvard Business School, the factors will continue to be analysed and the end report can be expected at the end of November 2012. The evaluation of Latvia’s competitiveness was commissioned by the State Chancellery of Latvia and it is conducted by the SSE Riga, BICEPS and Ernst & Young, and initiated by Latvian PM Valdis Dombrovskis.

There are various institutions and private companies offers support programmes, including various business incubators, for young businesses. However, only few offer actual money, most provide only legal or financial consulting. Among those offering money are grant programmes and competitions, including Peak Time, which offers 5,000 Ls main prize and 3,000 Ls and 1,000 Ls to the second and third place, respectively.

There are still heated discussions about Immigration law amendments, allowing third countries’ investors to receive residence permits easier in Latvia. There is an interview with anonymous entrepreneur from Moscow who has business in Latvia, he admits that such residence permit would definitely ease his life. Asked about education level in Latvia, he says that for the business he is interested only in the SSE Riga graduates.

The interview with child actress, now an adult, Elīna Siliņa. Twelve years old, she starred in a fantasy film, but did not choose the life of actress, instead went to study at SSE Riga and wrote the graduation paper on financial management in Latvian theatres. Now she is running for parliament from Zatlers’ Reforms Party.

Latvian Commerce and Industry Chamber and Ir magazine organize pre-election debates between entrepreneurs and ministers candidates on September 9 at Islande hotel. Five political parties are scheduled to be represented, and one of the experts to represent the Chamber is Arnis Sauka, researcher of shadow economy and the lecturer at the SSE Riga.

Despite the Doctor’s degree, Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis from Zatler’s Reforms Party is not active economically, his MP candidate declaration shows. He owns no shares inj any company, has not made any signifcant investments, but has 130 thousand lats debts. He is associated professor at the SSE Riga and researcher at BICEPS.

The round table discussion of successful Latvian entrepreneurs on how to start the business in Latvia and the business environment in Latvia in general. Valmiermuižas alus brewery co-owner Aigars Ruņģis says that mentors movement is a superb thing. There is a SSE Riga Mentors Club, and the young entrepreneurs can try out their idea there - they might find a graduate interested in mentoring them. This is a chance to avoid some of the problems caused by insufficient experience.

Almost 500 business ideas have been submitted to the Peak Time 2011, and the authors of the 187 best ideas have moved to the second stage, to be unveiled at September 13. During this time, they will attend training courses on business plans, marketing, financial and risk management and consult with experts, making a business plan of their own at the end. The best 15 will move to finals, where they will compete for the main prize - 5,000 Lats - and other prizes.
