There were a couple of important events for the teachers held in the premises of the University of Latvia. During once of the conferences, dr. Diāna Pauna of SSE Riga read the lecture on innovations in education. She spoke about the global and Latvian develop scenarios and distinguished the common tendencies, which affect us all. She stressed the need for education system creating independently-thinking and initiative-rich people. She defined the internal and external environment of education and argued that the state should only set the framework with the legislation, leaving the schools with responsibility and freedom to fill it, she said in the lecture.

A while ago a mother and daughter decided to open the first and so far the only driving school where all instructors are women only. The daughter Laura, being then the third year student at SSE Riga, became the director of the company, while mother Vita taught theory.

The entrepreneur Iluta Skrūzkalne, head of GfK in Baltics, explains the qualities necessary for business world. She mention that her eldest daughter, tired of talks about economics at home, went to study at Academy of Culture, but a year later returned back and decided to enter SSE Riga after all.

The Swedish diplomat Lars Peter Freden has presented his new book “The Return. Swedish security policy and the first years of Baltic states regained independence, 1991-1994”, qwith support from Meireovics Society and Swedish Embassy. During the presentation, held at SSE Riga, there were statements that the book is almost comparable to Wikileaks, when it comes to openness. While this could be exaggerated, the viewpoint presented in the book differs from viewpoint of Latvians.

In order to strengthen the academic unity of the student’s fraternity and support diligent students, the Armīns Rūsis tribute scholarship is granted for the sixth consecutive year. Students from the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Latvian University of Agriculture, Rīga Stradiņa University, SSE Riga and Riga Graduate School of Law can apply for the scholarship, and the application starts in August.

The fostering of business is mentioned as a cure to boost economics and tackle crisis. One of the methods to measure the business activities in Latvia is to analyse the dynamics of the results of the Peak Time. This competition of business plans, held for the fifth consecutive year, showed that the crisis has served as a kick to start new activities, as the number of applications rose to 677 last year. Although the number of applicants does not show how many new companies are launched, it proves the interest in business.

On August 30, SSE Riga Rector Anders Paalzow and Jānis Endziņš, the chairman of the board of the Latvian Chamber of Trade and Commerce, will sign an almost half a million euros worth agreement on providing quality programmes and courses of further education for entrepreneurs.

This week, SSE Riga will sign 415,219 EUR agreement with the Latvian Chamber of Trade and Commerce (LTRK) on further education programme and providing courses for entrepreneurs. The programmes are organized as part of LTRK training project Produktivitate.lv and they are co-financed by the European Social Fund. The aim of the project is to increase the productivity and competitiveness of Latvia companies in international markets.

The students can now start to apply for University of Latvia Fund scholarships for the academic year of 2011/2012. The Armīns Rūsis tribute scholarship is again awarded this year, and its total volume is around 17,000 Lats.
