President of Latvia Andris Bērziņš has decided to create a new Strategic Development Commission. It will replace the former President’s Strategic Analysis Commission, however the new commission will also have different composition and goals. The head of the Strategic Analysis Commission was SSE Riga associate professor Roberts Ķīlis, and among its participants was SSE Riga professor Andris Strazds. The commission stopped its work on July 7, after former president Valdis Zatlers was not reelected.

In Latvia, there is enough academic staff with doctorates degrees for only two large universities, while the government maintains seventeen. Students have a selection of 960 study programs available, but their quality is often poor. Economist Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis, member of the Presidents Strategic Analysis Commission (SAC), says that universities do not care about what happens to students after completing the studies, as the focus of their attention are the whims of the ministry, which distributes the budget, rather than the young people hoping to obtain good education. Dombrovskis teaches at SSE Riga, where, in spite of relatively high study costs, there is heavy competition for the available spots.

This year has seen great interest in the competition -- the informative seminars held throughout Latvia were attended by more than 250 participants.

Answering the question, Uldis Boldāns, student at SSE Riga, says that holding a new election would be technically possible, but he does not see a rational justification for it. The presidential election system should be changed first; the current system is not transparent, and the selection of presidential candidates cannot improve in such conditions.

Jeffrey Sommers, associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, guest lecturer at SSE Riga and participant of the Reform Task Force Latvia (RTFL), was one of the people who predicted the financial crisis of 2008 and had his forecasts about its effects published in The Financial Times. Today he believes that Latvia is still in a crisis, and that economist Anders Åslund is being deliberately disingenuous in the book How Latvia Came Through the Financial Crisis, co-written by Åslund and Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis.
